More information about Eixample

One of Barcelona's gay villages is located in Eixample, cheekily nicknamed Gaixample. Eixample is characterised by long straight streets and a strict grid pattern. It is usually divided into neighbourhoods, the left and right sides of the district (Esquerra de l'Eixample and Dreta de l'Eixample, respectively) although there are actually five neighbourhoods.

The district is rather well-off, particularly in the centre, but it is also defined by old, decaying buildings inhabited by lonely and ageing tenants. There is also a large population of immigrants particularly in the neighbourhood of Fort Pius which has a fair amount of Chinese residents and Asian shops.
